Using Math to Examine Art SUMMARY: Using Math to Examine Art is a lesson designed to incorporate math concepts to explain original pieces of art. First, students will view the Sample Artwork video segment to activate prior knowledge about math and art. Then students will put Karen Kunc’s pieces in chronological order and discuss how her artwork evolves over time using mathematics vocabulary. Next, students will be assessed on examining a piece of artwork in terms of math vocabulary. After that students will choose their favorite piece by Kunc and interpret the piece with movements or music and share with the class. CONTENT STANDARDS: Area: Mathematics Grades: 3 Statement: Geometry and Spatial Sense Benchmark: Provide rationale for groupings and comparisons of two-dimensional figures and three-dimensional objects. Indicators: Y2003.CMA.S03.G03-04.BA.L03.I01 Analyze and describe properties of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects using terms such as vertex, edge, angle, side and face.
